The simple answer is because there is a need. Chiropractors are also better qualified than most nutritionists and medical doctors. This may seem like an arrogant statement but it’s true. Most medical doctors receive no education in nutrition. NONE! Nutritionists obviously have education in nutrition but it is limited and tainted by western medicine thinking. The philosophy in which chiropractic is established is very different than that of western medicine and healthcare. This foundation allows chiropractors a unique opportunity to help patients improve their health with nutrition.
The difference comes down to how and why you treat patients.
The common goal of medicine is to treat symptoms. If you have a symptom then they have a drug or surgery. Often the underlying cause of the symptoms is overlooked. Even if it is recognized, if you have a heart or liver problem the solution is NEVER to improve the health of that organ but to manipulate the organ with synthetic chemicals to get eliminate the symptom.
If your heart is like a horse in a race. You want that horse to be able to run as fast as possible. There are many different ways to get that horse to run faster but some are dangerous and not as effective long term. For example, I can either use training, exercise, high-quality food, plenty of rest and minimal stress. Another option is I can use steroids, stimulants, and force to whip the horse as hard and as often as possible to get him to run. You can see how the later may work faster and “better” for a short time but in the end that horse is not going to survive long or have a good quality of life.
Medical doctors and nutritionists, who are often a branch of the medical community, view nutrition similarly to drugs. Food is just a bunch of chemical compounds found in nature which is really no different than the chemical compounds found in highly processed food or pharmaceutical drugs.
Chemicals are chemicals.
Vitamin C is Vitamin C no matter what form. Nutrition is just another form of less advanced medicine that doesn’t have the “brilliance” of ‘modern man’ guiding it the way pharmaceutical drugs do. They see the short term “improvements” and view them as better health. In reality, these changes in symptoms are almost always damaging to the overall health of the person.
Chiropractic is “The science, art, and philosophy of maintaining the neuromusculoskeletal system for ideal structure and function.” Chiropractors seek to improve the spine to improve health. Nutrition is “The science of building and maintain the human body with food.” You can see how the two are very similar. At their core, they are both oriented to improve the health and function of the human body. In contrast, medicine is “any substance or substances used in treating disease or illness; medicament; remedy.” Chiropractic and nutrition can and should be used to maintain and improve health not merely to treat disease or illness and by extension symptoms.
At Corrective Chiropractic in Greenville, NC we use whole food supplements to build and support the functions of your body. We do not treat disease or illness. We use nutrition to improve health.
