Chiropractor Rant About Injections for Migraines
I’m am going to try and keep calm but this one really frustrates me. It saddens me that I hear so often that people are getting injections for their migraines. Another particularly common statement that preempts this is “I went to a chiropractor for “x” number of years and it never helped”. First off. IT was not the problem. Chiropractic is the implied “it” that somehow didn’t work but the reality is that the chiropractor did not find and fix the problem. It’s ok. That doesn’t mean that he is a terrible chiropractor. The odds are that if you went to get one or more injections to help with your headaches or migraines then you would have been better off finding another chiropractor.
-
WHAT primary condition was found to prove this?
-
Did your medical doctor or chiropractor find and verify the exact cause of your problem?
-
I don’t mean did he/she say… well, I guess or it must be “X” since nothing is “working”. Or worse yet did he/she say they knew what it was but they have no x-rays, test or exam or proof of it?
-
It is a real possibility that you have headaches or migraines because of a condition that is not treatable by a chiropractor or, at least, chiropractic adjustments. There are plenty of hormonal issues or cancer, etc. that can be causing your migraines. However, this is not typically the case and if it is there is NO reason for you to be getting injections.
-
If no new diagnosis was suggested other than the typical headaches, tension headaches, chronic tension headaches, migraines with aura, migraines without aura, and the several dozens of different headache and migraine diagnosis that you can get labeled with, then what are you treating?
-
If you got an injection then the problem was almost 100% a structural issue. The injections given for headaches are usually done for inflammation or muscle tension. Both of which are HIGHLY likely to be there as a result of a structural shift in the spine. Getting the injection DID NOT FIX THIS. The structural shift is still there but you are none the wise because the muscle are now paralyzed or the inflammation has now been chemically altered via drugs.
Let me break it down for you. There is NO reality in which you have tension headaches or migraines “caused” by muscle tension or spasm that chiropractic should not be able to help at least a little but very often chiropractic is able to completely resolve. NONE. Don’t argue with me because you are wrong. More often than not this imbalance of spine and muscle tension is a result of your spine being SHIFTED away from its ideal position, thus causing tension and pain and irritation to the nerves that innervate or supply nerve information to your neck and head. This is ONLY a chiropractic problem that can ONLY be fixed and corrected by a chiropractor, sometimes only a good chiropractor.
OPTIONS for Headaches and Migraines
I did not say that a medical doctor can’t help you. There are plenty of other treatment options available for these types of tension headaches and migraines besides chiropractic. Just realize that none of these will change the structure of your spine from abnormal towards normal. Most commonly medical doctors will prescribe:
-
NSAIDS: to reduce pain and inflammation
-
Anti-nausea drugs
-
Antidepressants: seriously!?!? How is this treating the problem causing a headache or a migraine! This seems like they’re just giving up. Like your MD is saying “Well you’re going to be depressed because this isn’t going to change so here’s some more drugs.”
-
Beta-blockers or Calcium Channel Blockers to reduce blood pressure
-
The assumption here is that high blood pressure is THE cause. Now it certainly can be an attributing factor but WHY is it that you don’t have a headache every time your BP is high then?
-
-
Antiseizure drugs: no idea what the thought process behind this is. Just like with any drug you should ALWAYS ASK why you are being told to take this and how it is working. And finally…
-
Botox injections
-
No that’s not a typo. You are being injected with a toxin that paralyzes muscle to reduce the tension.
-
Can anyone spot the one question that almost NEVER gets asked by either patient or doctor at this point? “What caused the muscle tension?” No doubt the injections can reduce some of the symptoms. And if they do it only confirms that the problem is and should only be a chiropractic problem treated by a chiropractor. Well, there is a reason for that tension and a structural chiropractic will be sure to find the problem. If you went to a chiropractor for 10 years and got no results, that does not mean that chiropractic doesn’t work. That only proves that you were going to the wrong chiropractor. How many mechanics do you have to visit before you find someone you trust? The same goes for medical doctors and certainly chiropractors.
